Web Stuff

Postby Xeevo » Wed Jan 06, 2010 8:21 pm

Hi all. Have been tinkering around with Google AdSense for our audio website and noticed a funny thing with some of the ads. Wondered if anyone had any experience with this Google advertising stuff. I'm trying to keep it low key since nobody like ads everywhere but got to figure out a way to generate funding...blah blah.

Anyway, the thing I noticed was that a few ads popped up on the site for Star Wars Galaxies. Not only are these the only MMO ads to appear - but it seems like a fluke that it would be SWG (which was my MMO of choice a few years back).

The funny thing is - to my knowledge there's no mention of Star Wars Galaxies anywhere on the Vexation Audio website - so is this just a fluke? Or is Google tracking where visitors are coming from - and it's noticed SWG sites being a point of departure?

Any info appreciated - as I've said, I'm not very tech-savvy - but several members here have given me some great pointers in the past.

Hey bud,

I may be 'completely' off here, but as far as I always 'thought' I knew, the ads that appear on googleads is different for each user and takes into account things like their location and previous browsing history. A good example of this seems to be whenever I get popups, they're always localised claiming some South African bird is desperate to sell penix enlargements or something, most often, from the city nearest to me which was quite unnerving the first time because I live in the sticks.

Maybe, if you saw a galaxies ad, it's not what everyone would see coming to the site, and it's tailored to your specific googleblend advertising history etc.

As I said, I've got no idea if any of that is even halfway valid, just what I always thought :D

There is a decent description of how it works on wikipedia. Laex is correct for search and pretty close for sites but it also takes into account the content of your web site and if you have AdWords defined.

Google uses its Internet search technology to serve advertisements based on website content, the user's geographical location, and other factors.
