It's weird as well for me, Koje. Was telling Talon I had the same problem that the AI seems buggy.
When I played Final Fantasy XII, their gambit system used AI to programme responses. And you had to do it in order of priority, so that at any given second, it would run through all commands and apply them in order. So a 'Health <=50% cast 'heal" gambit would have a chance of firing every second or so, as long as it was at the top. If it was below say, "Mana <=50% - use pot" if both statements became true simultaneously, then it would drink a pot first, get global cooldown and then only cast heal.
In Dragon Age though, it seems Wynne will obey a command, but only once. She'll throw my first heal, but then that's it. If two characters fall below a health threshold, she'll cast heal once, on the first character, and then ignore the second.
I think I'm going to spend some time browsing the forums and see what they say about the AI. Maybe I'm missing something.
When I was playing my tank playthrough, he didn't do anything, he just absorbed damage. So I had plenty time to micro-manage everyone. Now that I'm playing a rogue, I just want to backstab and worry about positioning, so I want them to do silly things like heal without me.
